Zambian Election

Zambia's election day was Thursday, and since the polls closed at about 18:00 that night, the counting has progressed slowly. As expected, the battle is between Rupiah Banda of the ruling MMD party and Michael Sata of the opposition Patriotic Front. Hakainde Hilichema is running a distant third.

Sata gained an early lead, as the urban areas where he is strongest were the first to return, count, and certify their ballots. Votes from Banda's strongholds in the more rural constituencies are slower coming in, and last I saw on ZNBC was a small Sata lead of about 42-38%.

Believe it or not, I have an inside source (hilarious, I know) reporting to me that unofficial counts have Banda pulling ahead recently as more of the rural constituencies report. Could be a close one!
